A Matter of Faith

Sunday is a good day to talk about faith.

How much faith do you have and in what do you place it?

Raising questions of faith on a Sunday naturally evokes religion.  It’s not a topic most people like to discuss in the context of work, but all of us have faith in something:  ourselves, family, community, employers, science, money, an institution or idea, the future, God, the universe.  Human beings are hard-wired at birth to believe.

It’s axiomatic that belief is fundamental to the success of any business.  Steve Jobs’ famed “reality distortion field” was a way of transmitting or extending his own strong beliefs about his ideas and products to others.  Many successful entrepreneurs say the only thing that carries them through the tough times is a level of belief that borders on delusion.

No matter where you are in your career, but especially if you’re contemplating a change – going for that promotion, interviewing for a new gig, or venturing out on your own – it’s good idea to take inventory of your own beliefs.

Unless you know where your faith lies, what you truly believe in, you’ll never have enough of it to fulfill your potential.
